SUMMARY: 2025 Kickoff Event
DESCRIPTION:Malden Reads is thrilled to announce the kickoff of our 2025 season! This year’s community read selection is The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba. Set in drought-stricken Malawi\, this inspiring true story follows a young boy who\, despite incredible obstacles\, used his ingenuity to bring electricity and water to his village. Through his determination and resourcefulness\, William Kamkwamba harnessed the power of wind energy to create life-changing solutions for his community. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe are proud to partner with Bread of Life\, a vital food security organization that provides over 1.5 million pounds of free food annually to families\, individuals\, youth\, and seniors in the metro-Boston north area. \n\n\n\nAt this kickoff event\, local groups will showcase how they’re using resources to foster sustainability and innovation within our community. These efforts align with the themes of The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind\, including water conservation\, gardening for food security\, and teaching science to the next generation. The kickoff event will also include live music\, poetry\, a variety of refreshments\, and a short presentation.  \n\n\n\nMalden Reads invites you to join us in this shared reading journey and kickoff event\, reflecting on William Kamkwamba’s story and its relevance to our own lives. Together\, we’ll explore ways to bring positive change to Malden and beyond\, supporting both human and environmental well-being. \n\n\n\nLimited parking will be available as follows: 1) On-street parking; 2) Ferry Street parking lot along the bike path; 3) Sacred Hearts Church parking spots marked with a cross in Central Plaza lot at 219 Centre Street (others will be ticketed). \n\n\n\nWe look forward to involving the whole community in our 15th year anniversary program year. The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind is the title of all three editions of the Malden Reads selection for 2025: the adult edition\, the young readers edition\, as well as the picture book. Malden Reads events will discuss the themes of the books\, and readers may choose among the different editions. We consider the young readers edition to be an engaging and accessible read for all ages\, including adults.

SUMMARY:Film Screening & Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the Malden Reads Film Screening and discussion about William And The Windmill. We will be showing this film at the Malden Public Library on Wednesday\, March 26\, 2025: 6:00-8:00pm. This documentary explores the life of William Kamkwamba\, author of the book\, The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind\, Malden Reads’ 2025 selection. \n\n\n\n“With only a library book as his guide\, 14-year-old William Kamkwamba builds a windmill in his Malawian village that changes his life forever. Using junk parts and an inexhaustible imagination\, he harnesses enough energy to power a generator that saves his family from famine and resuscitates his dying farming community. An instant media sensation\, the teen soon has the ability to chart a previously unimaginable future of TEDtalks\, Ivy League schools\, and speaking tours. But despite the help of an American entrepreneur who helps navigate his success\, some changes threaten to capsize him. He was once just a kid back home\, but suddenly he’s a village leader.” William And The Windmill is directed by Ben Nabors. The film is Not Rated (97 min.) (2013). \n\n\n\nPick up a copy of the book\, The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind\, at the Malden Public Library or find the digital copy on Libby. \n\n\n\nFor more details about our Malden Reads Film Screening & Discussion\, please contact the Malden Public Library at 781-324-0218. SUMMARY:2026 Opening Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Malden Reads invites residents of all ages to kick off its 2026 community reading program with a free celebration on Monday\, February 9\, 2026\, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.\, at the Malden Public Library\, 36 Salem Street.  \n\n\n\nThis year’s book selection\, Our Missing Hearts by bestselling author Celeste Ng\, explores themes of love\, resistance\, and belonging. The kickoff event will bring together literature\, history\, art\, and conversation through interactive activities and experiences for all ages. No need to read the book in advance – everyone is welcome.  \n\n\n\nEvent Highlights  \n\n\n\n● Musical Performance: The band Tale Spin\, fronted by chef and musician David Stein and his wife Sue\, will perform acoustic protest music of the last century\, including a community singalong. David and Sue have deep connections to Malden as former  \n\n\n\nresidents\, and David is a former Malden Reads committee member who created memorable programs including a pop-up restaurant and music club event featuring his band Soulshine.  \n\n\n\n● Yarn as Protest Art: Exploration of how fiber arts can be used as tools for peaceful protest and self-expression  \n\n\n\n● Art Exhibition: View prints by Corita Kent (also known as Sister Mary Corita)\, the artist best known for her art on the Boston Gas tanks along Route 93 southbound in the 1970s as well as the Love stamp in the 1980s. Corita’s work and her messages of peace and social justice reflect her understanding of the power of language\, just like in Our Missing Hearts\, and continue to resonate today.  \n\n\n\n● Revolutionary Photo Stations: Step back in time with colonial costume photo opportunities and a model of a Boston Tea Party ship where participants can toss tea bales overboard\, celebrating the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution and Malden’s role as the first town to declare independence. \n\n\n\n● Video Screenings: Short videos by Malden Revolution’s Mark Linehan showcasing Malden’s revolutionary history and drawing connections between past and present acts of civic engagement  \n\n\n\n● Arts & Crafts for All Ages: Led by Malden High’s Love 4 Kids club\, offering creative projects that encourage connection and creativity  \n\n\n\n● Heart-Shaped Cookie Decorating: A fun and delicious hands-on activity for participants of all ages  \n\n\n\n● Refreshments: Food and drink will be available throughout the evening.  \n\n\n\n● Books Available: Attendees can borrow Our Missing Hearts from the library circulation desk with their Malden Public Library card.  \n\n\n\nVolunteer support for the evening will be provided by the Malden High YMCA Leaders.

SUMMARY:Conversation & Connection
DESCRIPTION:A community conversation about belonging\, memory\, and how we stay connected across difference. \n\n\n\nThe Divides Project\, in collaboration with Malden Reads and the Chinese Culture Connection (CCC)\, invite the community to a free evening of conversation and connection in the welcoming space of CCC’s new community room and offices. \n\n\n\nInspired by the themes of this year’s Malden Reads book selection Our Missing Hearts by Celeste Ng\, this community gathering invites participants of all backgrounds to come together for conversation—about division\, belonging\, and connection. \n\n\n\nYou do not need to have read the book to attend. Through facilitated conversation\, we’ll explore questions that feel especially present today: Why do divides emerge? How do fear and misunderstanding take root? What helps communities stay connected across differences? \n\n\n\nWhether or not you have read the book\, we will make it easy and welcoming to join the discussion. \n\n\n\nRefreshments will be provided.
